How to stop reading erotica and spicy books when you love to read
Why the book counts, how to choose the ending before you open it, and what reading you get to keep.
Updated 2026-09-28
The chapter you meant to stop at. The fanfiction tab one swipe away. The "spicy" recommendation from a friend who said it was mostly the plot. Nobody calls any of this porn, so nobody talks about it, and a lot of Christian women are carrying a reading habit they would never describe out loud.
If that is you, take a breath. You are not broken, and you are not the only one. Reading is one of the good gifts. This guide is about keeping the gift and leaving the part that has been quietly taking from you.
Why the book counts
Words work differently than video, and in some ways they work harder. A story does not just show you something. It puts you inside it. You are the one being chosen, being seen, being fully known by someone who never gets tired of you. For a woman who feels unseen in her real life, that is not a small pull.
Your brain does not care whether it was a screen or a page. It remembers what happened in your body. The same rush trains the same loop. That is why the "it is just a book" defense stops working after a while. You already know it is more than a book.
Choose the ending first
Willpower in the middle of chapter twelve is not a plan. Decide the ending before you open the book.
- Before you start a novel, decide where you will stop, and tell one friend where that line is.
- Better still, choose books that never need a line. A story with real tension does not need a bedroom scene to hold you.
- Read reviews for content the way you would check a movie rating. It takes two minutes and saves you the argument at midnight.
- If the book is already open and you are already there, close it and put it in another room. Not forever. For tonight.
Give the swipe a new home
Fanfiction and "book" corners of the internet are built for the late, lonely hour. Deleting the app helps for about a week, because the reach was never really about the app. It was about the hour.
So give the hour a new home. A different tab that is already open: a psalm, a voice note from a friend, a novel you chose on purpose. Move your reading to the morning if the night is where it always goes wrong. Replace, do not only delete.
“Whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.”
Reading you can keep
You do not have to give up stories. You get to be choosy about them, which is a different thing entirely.
- Look for authors who write longing without writing the scene.
- Ask the friend who reads what you read to hold the same line with you.
- Keep a "read next" list so a bad night never chooses your next book for you.
- Notice how you feel an hour after you close a book. That feeling is honest, and it is a good guide.
What Made New does about this
Made New is a private, faith-rooted app for Christian women, and erotica and fanfiction are named in the first questions it asks, not tucked in as an afterthought.
- A plan built from your answers. When you name "erotica or spicy books" or "fanfiction" as what feels heaviest, the plan shapes itself around that, with practices like closing the book on purpose and guarding the late hours.
- Steady Me for the minute the pull arrives: one tap, a breath, a reminder of what is true.
- Be Still sessions with Scripture and the stories of women in the Bible, for the nights your mind will not slow down.
- Your Companion, an AI companion grounded in Scripture, for talking it through without a lecture.
- Progress that does not disappear after a hard day.

Questions women ask
Is reading spicy books actually a sin?
Honestly, it can be. If a book is feeding lust, it is working against the heart God is giving you, whether the pictures are on a screen or in your head. You are still His while you walk away from it, and grace is how you leave it. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8)
What about fanfiction and fantasy romance?
They count in exactly the same way, and for a lot of women they are the bigger door, because they never look like a problem from the outside. If a story leaves you in the same loop, it belongs in the same conversation.
Can I still read romance at all?
Yes. Longing, tension, and love stories are not the problem. Scenes written to produce a rush are. Plenty of authors write the first without the second. Choosing them is not a loss. It is you deciding what your imagination gets to keep.
